Chips are Down

when the chips are down은 어떤 일이나 상황이 판가름 나는 중요한 순간을 뜻합니다. Chips는 원래 미국의 카드 노름인 포커 게임에서 유래된 단어입니다.C-h-I-p은 포커 게임에서 판돈으로 거는 현금대신 사용되는 패를 말합니다.

패를 걸고나면 “when the chips are down ” 각자의 카드를 펼쳐 보이고 누가 그 판을 이겼는지를 가리게 되니까 중요한 순간이 되는 겁니다.
