Fish Story
Fish story? 물고기 이야기..? 무슨 말일까요? 다 그렇지는 않지만 낚시꾼들은 잡은 물고기의 크기에
관해서 정직하지 않은경향이 가끔 있는 것 같습니다. 그러니까 과장할 때가 많다는 말인데요, 누가 월척을 했다고
해도 사실은 붕어를 잡고 그런 것인지는 본 사람이 아니면 모르죠. Fish story라는 말이, “ 더욱 그럴듯하게
들리도록 사실을 부풀린 얘기”라는 뜻이 된 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다. Fish story란 말이 다음 예문에서는
어떻게 쓰였는지 보세요.
“My granddad and his friends like to get together and tell
each other fish stories about what great heroes they were in
World War II. We don’t really believe them but they’re sure
fun to listen to”
무슨 뜻입니까? 우리 할아버지와 친구는 like to get together, get together는 모인다
만난다 라는 말입니다. 만나서 tell each other fish stories..우리 할아버지와 그 친구들은
모여서 서로 서로 얘기나누길 좋아합니다. 어떤 얘기요? About what great heroes they
were 그러니까 자기들이 얼마나 훌륭한 영웅들이었는지, 언제 in world War II, 제 2차 세계대전때.
이 문장에서 what은 감탄문에 들어가는 what이죠. We don’t really believe them우리는
할아버지들의 얘기를 진짜 믿지 않지만, but they re sure fun to listen to 하지만
그 얘기를 듣는 것은 정말 재미있다 라는 말이었습니다. 정리해 보겠습니다 우리 할아버지와 그 친구들은 모여서
2차대전때 자기들이 얼마나 훌륭한 영웅이었는지를 즐겨 얘기한는데, 그 얘기를 진짜로 액면그대로 다 믿는 것은
아니지만 듣기는 정말 재미있다 라는 말이었습니다. 다시 한번 예문 읽어보세요.

이렇게 허풍떨기를 좋아하는 사람들은 웃기려고 하는 것이지, 사실 사람들이 자기 얘기를 진지하게 들을 거라고
기대하지는 않습니다. 사실상 맨처음 ‘fish story’라는 표현이 지면에 등장한 것은 우스개 소리로였습니다.
때는 1819년 세인트 루이스에서 미시시피강변에서였습니다. 이 말에 어떤 사연이 있는지 두번째 예문 읽어보세요.
“The reporter wrote that so many fish appeared in the river
that they blocked the channel that a steamboat couldn’t get
past. Then he told his readers this was the best fish story
he’d ever heard.”
그 기자가 쓰기를 So many fish appeared, in the river, 여기서는 mississippi강을
말하겠죠. 강에 너무나 많은 물고기들이 나타나서 so 하고 that 하면 너무 ~해서 ~하다로 해석합니다.
너무 많은 물고기들이 나타나서 that 그러니까 that 이하는 그 결과죠? they blocked the
channel물고기들이 해협을 막아버렸다, 물론 과장입니다. 그래서 a steamboat증기선이 couldn’t
get past지나갈 수 없었다 라고 기자가 썼는데, then he told his readers 그리고 그
기자는 독자들에게 말했다 this was the best fish story he’d ever heard 이
얘기는 자기가 들어본 것 중 최고의 fish story였다 라고 말했다는 얘기였습니다. 정리해보겠습니다. 이
기자는 강에 물고기가 넘쳐서 해협을 막아 증기선이 지나가지 못할 정도가 됐다고 쓴 다음, 독자들에게 이 얘기는
자기가 들어본 것 중 최고의 fish story라고 말했다 ? 라는 얘기였습니다. 앞에 예문 다시 한번 반복합니다.
