Tear your hair out

이 말은 머리를 잡아 뜯는다는 말입니다. 이 표현은 2천년도 넘는 옛날에 그리스 고전극에서 배우가 엄청난 슬픔이나 분노를 표현할 때 머리를 쥐어 뜯던 데서 유래된 말입니다.

요즘은 사람들이 화났다고 해서 그렇게 까지 하진 않지만, 그래도 이 표현은 계속 사용되고 있습니다. 아버지가 데이트 나가는 아들에게 마지못해 차를 빌려준 다음 어떤 일이 생겼는지 다음과 같이 얘기합니다.

I told the kid a hundred times to be careful with the car. So when I saw him come back with the front all bashed in, I tell you I was mad enough to tear my hair.

아들에게 백번도 넘게 조심하라고 일렀는데, 앞이 다 찌그러진 차를 몰고 집으로 돌아온 아들을 보았을때 머리를 잡아 뜯을 만큼 화가 난 것은 당연하겠죠, 그런 말이었습니다.
