Trim your sails, 오늘 공부하실 첫번째 표현인데요,trim이라는 동사는 손질한다는 말인데, 원래는
바람의 변화에 따라 항해를 조정한다는 뜻이었습니다. 그러다가 ‘Trim your sails’라는 표현은 새로운
상황에 따라 마음이나 행동을 바꾸는 것을 가리키는 말이 됐습니다. 아래 예문에서처럼 선거가 치열해지면 선거에
나선 후보들이 원래의 공약을 바꾸는 경우가 많습니다. 이럴 때도 trim sales라는 표현을 쓸 수 있습니다.
“First this candidate said he wanted to cut social security.
But when he saw most voters were against such cuts he quickly
trimmed his sails and completely changed his position.”
처음에 이 후보는 사회 보장세를 줄이고 싶다고 말했었습니다, 그러다가 대부분의 유권자들이 사회 보장세 삭감에
